Ancient Truths for Modern Times

Good morning!

1 Peter 3:1-6

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

So, why submit? This is a huge problem amongst the modern world. The idea of any kind of "submission" let alone that of a woman is considered a sexist and demeaning idea, however Peter gives three important reasons for why submission is vitally important in the role of a godly wife. Firstly, as we discussed last week submission is an obligation. As Christ submitted to the Father, the wife is to submit to her husband. Secondly, submission is an amazing opportunity! Opportunity? How in the world would a wife submitting to her husband be an opportunity? For a saved husband it is an encouragement and a lesson in fulfilling his own biblical obligations and for a lost husband it is a witness of the love of God! In short, it is an opportunity to be a teacher of the Gospel! Finally, Peter tells us it is an "ornament" of inward beauty. Sadly, in today's time women are more concerned with their physical beauty then with their inward character and it certainly shows itself in a horrible light in today's world even amongst women who claim to be God's children! Godly wives, submission is not weakness, it is not demeaning, and it is not an opportunity to be "run around" by your husband. It is an obligation to God, an opportunity to be a witness for God, and it will blossom your inward character in a way that will make you more beautiful than you already are!

With Love and Hope,
